Contemporary American Documentary

    This article sketches the contours of contemporary American documentary film through a close consideration of the impact that digital technology has had on the genre. In spite of many great nonfiction films and filmmakers, on a wider cultural level documentary has always been eclipsed by the dominance of the Hollywood film industry. Here I argue that our contemporary moment is altering this balance thanks to new streaming platforms, widespread device adoption, and the rise of social media. These advances are connected with specific films, filmmakers, and practices, and further placed within the wider history of American documentary.
