Richard T. Kelly was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1970, and grew up in Northern Ireland. He has worked as a theatre director, a journalist, a documentary-maker, a film festival programmer, and an editor of books. Sean Penn is the third book he has written, following the oral biography Alan Clarke (1998) and the interview collection The Name of This Book is Dogme 95 (2000).
